COMMON FOOT & ANKLE CONDITIONS

What Is Causing Your Ankle or Foot Pain?

The ankle and foot contain multiple joints, bones, tendons and ligaments. Identifying the structure responsible for your symptoms helps determine which treatment options may be appropriate.

Ankle Sprains and Ligament Injuries

An ankle sprain occurs when the supporting ligaments are stretched or torn, often after the ankle rolls or twists. Pain, bruising and swelling may make walking difficult.

Achilles Tendinopathy

This condition affects the tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. Symptoms can include pain, stiffness and tenderness behind the heel, particularly after activity or first thing in the morning.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis causes pain beneath the heel or along the arch of the foot. Discomfort is often worse during the first steps after rest and may increase after prolonged walking or standing.

Ankle and Foot Arthritis

Arthritis can cause joint pain, stiffness and swelling. Ankle osteoarthritis may develop after an earlier injury, while other forms of arthritis can affect different joints in the foot and ankle.

Foot and Ankle Tendon Problems

Problems affecting tendons around the ankle can cause localised pain, tenderness, swelling or reduced function during walking and exercise.

Forefoot Pain and Morton's Neuroma

Pain beneath the ball of the foot or burning and tingling towards the toes can be associated with several conditions, including metatarsalgia and Morton's neuroma.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Ankle pain can develop gradually because of tendon problems, arthritis, repetitive loading or footwear that places pressure on the joint. Persistent or worsening pain should be assessed to determine the cause.

An ankle sprain usually follows a twisting injury and may cause swelling, bruising and pain around the ligaments. Ankle arthritis can cause ongoing stiffness and pain during weight-bearing activities, sometimes following an earlier injury. The symptoms can overlap, so an assessment may be needed.

Pain beneath the heel or arch that is worse during the first steps after rest may be associated with plantar fasciitis. Pain at the back of the heel may involve the Achilles tendon. Persistent symptoms deserve assessment because treatment differs according to the underlying condition.

Many cases are managed without surgery through activity modification and a progressive rehabilitation programme. The right approach depends on the severity of symptoms and whether there is evidence of a significant tendon tear. Sudden pain with a popping sensation or sudden loss of push-off strength needs prompt medical assessment.

Not always. Some conditions can be diagnosed through your medical history and physical examination. Imaging may be appropriate where a fracture, tendon injury, ligament problem or another condition is suspected, or where the findings would affect treatment decisions.

Shockwave therapy may be considered for selected persistent tendon conditions or heel pain. It is not appropriate for every diagnosis, and the likely benefits and alternatives should be discussed before treatment.
