Yes, we can help!

Headaches are a very frequent disorder nowadays and the female population is the most affected. There are many different types of headaches, more than 100, and there is no one fits all solution, not even with medication.

According to data from the World Health Organization more than 45% of the population has suffered from at least one episode of headache in their life, 10-12% of migraine. Recurrent headaches affect the quality of life, and many people struggle to manage their pain during acute attacks.

Osteopathy and headaches

A well conducted body of research suggests the Osteopathic manual treatment as a valid therapy for headaches and cranio-facial pain. An interesting research study has evaluated the efficacy of osteopathic treatment in the management of headaches and related psychological and socio-economic problems. Forty patients were considered: 21 received osteopathic manipulative treatment, 19 constituted the control group that received a placebo treatment.

Patients underwent one month of treatment with one session per week. At the end of the 4 weeks significant changes were found from a statistical point of view, in particular:

  • reduction in frequency (number of episodes) of headache attacks (40% less, compared to before treatment)
  • reduction of the attack’s intensity
  • reduction in the amount of medicines intake
  • reduction in the amount of medicines intake

After three months the patients were re-assessed and reported significant improvements:

  • 50% reduction in the frequency of attacks
  • 20% reduction in intensity
  • reduction of drugs taken by 45%

The positive effects of osteopathic treatment on headache pain management could be due to neurochemical changes, such as opioid and serotonin concentrations that osteopathic manual treatment stimulates.

How can we help?

Each person is unique, and as such, must be examined and treated. During an Osteopathic consultation, we gather all the medical information about your headache to understand better which one you are suffering with. For example, its frequency, its symptoms, the possible triggers, what helps and what aggravates it etc. Based on this, we can best provide you with tailored hands-on treatment. This in order to achieve the best musculoskeletal balance within your body. But Osteopathy does not stop here. Included in the role of Osteopathy is giving you any advice on your lifestyle habits that we know can play a role in triggering or maintaining your headache. Also, osteopathic treatment can be used in conjunction with drug treatment for the management of headaches.

If you are suffering from headaches, the synergistic and holistic approach we have at RRMG can play a significant role in improving your quality of life.
